Eph 1:4 “… even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, …”
You were at the creation or foundation of the world. At least the physical you was. Let me try to explain how.
Sometimes a statement, quote or concept grabs your attention and can be a ‘light bulb’ moment – like in the cartoons where the character has a bright idea and a picture of a light bulb is displayed next to their head.
In doing research for my recent talk on ‘Does God Exist?’, I was listening to a video presentation by Dr Gerald Schroeder about the creation of the universe, when I had one of those ‘light bulb’ moments. In reality, it is really Dr Schroeder’s idea but I certainly was enlightened by it.
The ‘Big Bang’ Models of the creation of the universe have been the most strongly supported models over the last 20 years or so. While there still unresolved issues with the most popular ‘Big Bang’ models and there are alternative models which normally involve some form of ‘Steady State’ concept, the idea that the universe, both space and time were created some 13 billion years ago still appears to be the best fit for the evidence currently available.
The standard model for the big bang teaches that the initial creation, at least in the first fraction of a second, did not bring forth solid matter as we know it. The first creation was radiation or energy fields. The ‘big bang’ starts off with a state of extremely high density and pressure. This means that the majority of the energy is in the form of photons and other mass-less or nearly mass-less particles (like neutrinos) that move at near the speed of light.
Thus, we can think of the very beginning of this Universe as composed of light, that is, of light beams. Thanks to Einstein we now understand a little how this ‘light’ energy can be transformed into matter. Given a great deal of time, much of this radiation became matter and metamorphosed into stars and planets and ultimately into plant and animal life.
That is, light beams became alive.
While the ‘light beams’ may have changed form, their basis has not changed. Just as water, though it looks and feels vastly different from the gases oxygen and hydrogen of which it is composed, remains oxygen and hydrogen. In parallel, all the material world we see about us, though it may appear differently, is ultimately built of the light of the big bang.
In fact, every single cell in the body of every single human being was once part of the light that came into existence at the first moment of creation.
So your body, that is your physical or material self is made from light that was present at the creation of the Universe!
As Dr. Gerald Schroeder reflects, “Light beams learned to live, to love, feel joy, become self aware, sentient.”
Wow, hold it, wait a moment! How can light become aware; how can light become life!?
The creation of life from non-living matter is still one of the greatest mysteries of science. How matter and hence ‘condensed energy’ or originally light can become alive is, too date, beyond understanding.
I would suggest that it is in fact impossible.
Life is created from information and that information must exist prior to that life beginning. No scientific studies have come close to showing any possible means by which light or energy can, without external input from an intelligent source, create information and hence life. Stephen Meyer’s book “Signature in the cell: DNA and the evidence for Intelligent Design” explains this very well.
When we consider that all of the material universe is derived originally from ‘light beams’, the creation of living beings appears to require the external input of something more into this material Universe.
What does Genesis say?
Genesis 2:7 “… then the LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.”
Not only did the God Almighty create light in the beginning (Gen 1:3 “And God said, Let there be light, and there was light.”), but he also ‘breathed’ upon this light turned material so that this material could become alive.
